The late Abdul Mannan, former commander of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Muktijoddha Sangsad, has been made an accused in the case of attacking the anti-discrimination student movement in Rajshahi last July. A young man named Abdul Alim Dulal filed the case at the city’s Boalia Police Station on Sunday.
The first accused in the case is Rajshahi Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Dablu Sarkar. The second accused is Mahmudur Rahman Dipan, a RUET official and son of former independent MP Shafiqur Rahman Badsha from Rajshahi-2 (Sadar) constituency. Abdul Mannan is the 58th accused in the case. In this, 127 people have been named and 300 to 350 others have been made anonymous. The plaintiff in the case is Abdul Alim (22), son of Musharraf Hossain of Mollapara Mohalla of Rajpara Police Station in the city. Alim is an activist of Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation, an affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami. And his brother Shafiqul Islam is an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami. The statement said that on August 5, during the student-public movement, Abdul Alim was shot in the Alupatti area of Nagar.
The brave freedom fighter Abdul Mannan was a member of the Metropolitan Awami League. His home is in the Raninagar area of Rajshahi Nagar. He participated in the Liberation War of 1971 while he was a student of Rajshahi Medical College. He died on January 17 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital Dhaka. The next day, his body was buried with state honors at the Tikapara cemetery in Rajshahi.
The plaintiff Abdul Alim’s mobile phone was contacted to inquire about making the deceased an accused. At that time, his elder brother Shafiqul Islam answered the phone. Shafiqul said that he is a Jamaat-e-Islami worker. And his brother Abdul Alim is a supporter of the Workers’ Welfare Federation. Alim was shot during the attack on the student-public on August 5 last year. The case has been filed under the supervision of the organization. Regarding making the deceased an accused, Shafiqul Islam said, “Our elders have done everything. If there is anything to talk about, we have to talk to the organizing secretary of the metropolitan Jamaat, Jasim Uddin Sarkar.”
When contacted, Jasim Uddin Sarkar said, “I don’t know much about the case. I have to find out first. Let’s find out first, then I can talk about it.”
Regarding this, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Boalia Police Station, Mostaq Ahmed, said, “I don’t know whether the deceased is in the list of accused or not. We have to find out. If so, we will verify. He will be discharged when the charge sheet is filed in the case.”
Emon Ashraf, media and press secretary of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Jamaat, told Prothom Alo that the case was not an organizational decision of the Jamaat. He also knows about the matter and that freedom fighter Abdul Mannan is dead.
