In September 1969, Awami League President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman went to London. While he was being held in the ‘Agartala Conspiracy Case’, Bengalis living in the UK extended a helping hand to handle his case. They sent the famous lawyer Thomas William to Dhaka as Sheikh Mujib’s counsel. Sheikh Mujib had an ‘India connection’ in London. There, he was contacted by Fanindranath Banerjee, an officer of the Indian intelligence agency RAW. He was known as Nathbabu in the relevant circles. They discussed taking some preparatory measures in view of the possibility of an imminent political upheaval.
Sheikh Mujib returned to Dhaka and asked his four trusted youth leaders Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, Sirajul Alam Khan, Abdur Razzak and Tofail Ahmed to work together and prepare. He relied more on these four young men than on his party Awami League. They had unquestioning loyalty to Mujib.
