Gazipur City Corporation Secretary Namita Dey has written a letter requesting that special prayers be held in mosques for the repose of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s soul on Independence Day. After a huge discussion on social media about the letter, the officer was immediately transferred to the Ministry of Public Administration as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD). In addition, a show cause notice (show cause) has been issued to City Corporation Administrative Officer Hamida Akhtar for typing the letter and tricking the officer into signing it.

According to multiple sources, a letter signed by Gazipur City Corporation Secretary Namita Dey on March 20 requested mosques to hold special prayers for the repose of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s soul. However, after criticism began after the letter was published, it was later revised and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s name was removed from the letter.

The letter sent by the City Corporation mentioned, ‘March 26 is the Great Independence and National Day 2025. As part of observing the matter with due dignity as per the government decision, it is requested to offer special prayers at your mosque at a convenient time on that day to seek forgiveness for the soul of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for the progress of the country and the nation, and in memory of the martyrs of the Liberation War.’

When Namita De’s mobile phone was called several times, the connection was disconnected. According to City Corporation sources, Namita De has been working in the Gazipur City Corporation for a long time. Corporation Administrator and Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury said that action has already been taken against those involved in the incident. When the matter came to the attention of the concerned authorities, Namita De was transferred. On Tuesday, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Abul Hayat Md. In a letter signed by Rafiq, Namita De was appointed as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of the Ministry of Public Administration.
