A gang was smuggling expensive smartphones including iPhones in Bangladesh to India, and then smuggling stolen mobile phones from India to Bangladesh to sell cosmetics, saris and three-piece suits.
Nine Indians and one Bangladeshi from this gang were arrested by the Organized Crime and Car Theft Prevention Team led by Deputy Police Commissioner of Detective Branch of DMP Lalbagh (promotional to Additional DIG) Mashiur Rahman.
They have been selling cosmetics, sex pills and gels. The arrested people have admitted that none of the seized goods were brought legally. They have been smuggling these Indian goods to Bangladesh for a long time without paying any tax on the inter-state train that runs from Kolkata to Dhaka Cantonment and selling them. The arrested people have admitted that they have previously brought hundreds of stolen mobile phones, hundreds of bottles of liquor and beer to Bangladesh in bundles of clothes. Before the month of Ramadan and Eid, they illegally brought only cosmetics, clothes, shoes, sandals, sex pills and gel without paying any duty or VAT and stocked them.
The arrested are Indian citizens Raja Shao, Pankaj Biswas, Utpal Maity, Dipankar Ghosh, Raju Das, Sujan Das, SK Azgar Ali, Laraib Ashrab, Samarjit Das and Bangladeshi citizen Murad Gazi. During the arrest, 21 expensive mobile phones, a huge amount of cosmetics, sarees, three-piece suits, 5 Indian passports and cash smuggled from India were recovered from their custody.
DMP Additional Police Commissioner (Detective) Mohammad Harun Or Rashid gave details about this at a press briefing held at the spot in Madhya Badda on Thursday morning.
He said, for a long time, a gang used to steal expensive mobile phones, including iPhones and Samsung phones, from Bangladesh and smuggle them to India. They used to bring some of the stolen mobile phones from India to Bangladesh and sell them. They were arrested in a special operation in the capital's Madhya Badda area yesterday (Wednesday) night.
Regarding the information obtained during the initial interrogation, this intelligence officer said that the arrested Bangladeshi Murad Gazi, along with his sister Bobby, had been buying Indian clothes, shoes, sandals, oil, and soap online at his house in Madhya Badda for a long time.
DB's Harun said, the operation to arrest those involved in this gang is continuing. Legal action will be taken against the arrested.
