Six people, including three members of the same family, were killed in a horrific road accident in the Gurap area of West Bengal's Hooghly district. The fatalities occurred when a dumper truck collided head-on with a motor-driven rickshaw (Toto) on Tuesday (March 12) morning. A child is also among the deceased.
According to local sources, a Toto with six passengers was standing at the Kangsaripur intersection of National Highway 23 in Gurap on Tuesday morning. At that time, a dumper truck coming from the opposite direction suddenly ran over it. The passengers inside the Toto were seriously injured in the incident.
After the incident, local residents nearby immediately rescued the injured and took them to the Burdwan Medical College Hospital. The six people were declared dead by the doctors on duty. The seriously injured Toto driver Soumen Ghosh is undergoing treatment at the hospital. He is said to have suffered head and hand injuries.
The deceased in the incident are Bidyut Bera (29) and his wife Preeti Bera (22), and their son, Shishu Bihan Bera (2). The three people are from Dadpur Bakreshwar area of Hooghly. The other three deceased are Sreja Bhattacharya (20) from Vastara area of Hooghly, Nupur Das (50) and Ramprasad Das (62) from Pandua area.
Local resident Mohammad Hanif said that there were seven passengers including the driver in the Toto. Among them was a child and his parents and a college student. Some were going to see a doctor, some were going to their own work. But the reckless dumper truck crushed the Toto. Although the Toto driver survived, all the passengers died.
In this regard, Hooghly Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Sarkar said that the dumper truck driver has been arrested. The police have started an investigation into the entire incident. An investigation has been started into why the dumper driver lost control and hit the vehicle in this way. It is also being investigated whether the driver was drunk or not. Although the accident disrupted traffic at Kangsaripur intersection for a while, the police later came and brought the situation under control.
