The holy month of Ramadan is starting in Bangladesh from tomorrow, Tuesday, subject to the sighting of the moon. Before that, the prices of all products in the market have increased. Like every year, the prices of lemons, cucumbers, and brinjals have increased.
Vendors say that in the last two days, the price of lemons has increased by 20-30 taka per kilo, and brinjals and cucumbers by 20 taka per kilo.
State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam himself is shocked by the skyrocketing price of lemons. In a meeting with leaders of the Raw Market Traders Association after visiting Dhaka’s Mohammadpur Town Hall Market, the State Minister for Commerce said, “Here I saw the price of a lemon at 60 taka. That’s 15 taka per lemon. However, a little while ago, I called my constituency Tangail and found out that each lemon is being sold wholesale there at 5 to 6 taka. That is, after traveling 100 kilometers to Dhaka, the price of a lemon has tripled.”
Cucumbers and brinjals are also on the rise. Cucumbers are one of the ingredients of Iftar. Three types of cucumbers are now available in the market. Retailers are selling hybrid cucumbers at 60 to 70 taka per kg, and indigenous cucumbers at 110 to 120 taka per kg. However, a few days ago, both indigenous and hybrid varieties of cucumbers were being bought at 40 to 60 taka per kg.
