Amidst the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, the country’s largest wholesale cloth market, Islampur is witnessing a boom in sales. Islampur traders meet about 60 percent of the annual demand for locally produced domestic cloth and about 40 percent of the annual demand for foreign cloth.
Keeping Eid in mind, small vendors from all over the country have been shopping since Shabe Barat and before Ramadan. Traders have reported that the prices of cloth have increased due to the ongoing economic recession and that sales have not been as expected.
On Sunday (March 10), a visit to the business establishments in the capital’s Islampur, including Gulshan Ara City, China Tower, Ahsan Manzil (Mu.) Super Market, Lion Tower, Wali Ullah Mansion, and the surrounding areas showed that shops were well-decorated with various types of cloth. Traders have stocked up on goods demanded from all over the country for Eid. Starting from salwar-kameez, three-piece, saree-lungi, various types of than and gauze fabrics, domestic and foreign shirts, pants and gauze fabrics are kept in rows.
Islampur market is also famous for gauze fabrics, than cloth cut fabrics. It has been seen in Gulshan Ara City, domestic gauze fabrics are available at a minimum of 62 taka and a maximum of 185 taka. Boyle fabrics are available at a price of 57 taka to 87 taka
Poplin fabrics are being sold at a price of 105 taka. Foreign Chinese and Indian fabrics are available at a price of 100 taka to 300 taka per yard.
Shirts and pants fabrics are being sold on the occasion of Eid. Each piece of shirt fabric is available at a price of 500 taka to 2000 taka. Shirt pants fabrics include fine cotton, linen fabric, Oxford fabric, poplin fabric pants and shirts.
There are sarees of various domestic brands including Pakija, B Plus, Standard on the occasion of Eid. These sarees range in price from 700 to 2000 taka. Lungis range from a minimum of 400 to 1200 taka.
