Baghri Beel is located across three unions of Bandar and Sonargaon upazilas in Narayanganj. Kanchpur in Sonargaon to the north, Sadipur in the east and Madanpur in Bandar to the southwest. Four people died after a mob beating at the beel last Sunday night. Another person is undergoing treatment with serious injuries.
The murder case filed by the police at Sonargaon Police Station in this incident states that unidentified residents of the village around the beel thrashed the people on suspicion of being robbers. The autopsy report shows that various body parts of the deceased were bruised. There were also signs of injuries from various sharp weapons, including axes and axes, on their bodies.
Some local residents broadcast the incident live on Facebook on Sunday night. In these videos, hundreds of villagers, armed with various types of indigenous weapons including sticks, axes, axes and axes, are running through the dark beel with torches and mobile phone lights. Whenever they find suspicious people, they are hitting them indiscriminately. They are abusing them. Some are shouting and talking about killing them.
The issue of villagers suddenly becoming so brutal has come to the fore after four people were killed in a mob beating.
A young student who live-streamed the incident on Facebook was spoken to on Tuesday. The young man, who did not want to be named, said that he and six friends were chatting around 10:30 pm on Sunday. At that time, he heard an announcement on the microphone of the mosque in Kazardi village that 'robbers have fallen in the beel'. Later, the six friends, along with the villagers, moved towards the beel with sticks. At about the same time, announcements were made on the microphone from all the other mosques in the vicinity. People from the other side of the beel also came forward. Within 10 minutes, more than 500 people descended on the entire beel.
The young man said that earlier, a group of robbers had attacked Kazardi in two phases last Friday and Saturday. On Saturday, when the villagers realized, the robbers left. And on Friday, after looting two local houses, an old man named Islam Munshi was hacked and injured. So the villagers were alert and they were angry with the robbers.
In the last two days, at least 30 residents of four villages around the beel have been spoken to. They also said the same thing.
Edadul Haque, son of Islam Munshi, who was beaten by the robbers, said, "On Friday, five masked men stormed the house and looted two tons of gold jewelry. At that time, my old father was hacked and injured indiscriminately. After four days of treatment at the Pangu Hospital (National Orthopaedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute) in the capital, we returned home on Monday."
Edadul Haque also said that robberies often occur in the surrounding villages. The people of Sonargaon are terrified and angry about robberies. He said that in 2016, a villager was beaten to death in this beel on suspicion of being a robber.
Amir Ali and Hazrat Ali, residents of Baghri village, said that usually the villagers catch the robbers, beat them up and hand them over to the police. Or if a case is filed, the police arrest the robbers. But the members of the robber gang get out of jail and start robbing again.
16 robberies in three months, according to various media reports, at least 16 robberies have been raided in different parts of the upazila in the last three months. The robber gang has tied the hands, feet, and faces of the members of the house and looted money and gold ornaments. In some incidents, the people of the house have been beaten and injured by cutting them. To avoid robberies, residents of different villages in the upazila have also arranged night guards at the initiative of the local Union Parishad (UP) chairmen.
However, Sonargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Kamruzzaman claims that robberies are not as common in Sonargaon as before. He argued that only one robbery case has been filed in Sonargaon Police Station in the last three months. During this period, the police have arrested 20 to 25 people while preparing for the robbery. Three cases have been filed against them.
Kamruzzaman also said that when robbers are arrested, they often escape quickly due to loopholes in the law. Again, those who are punished end up getting out and engaging in crime again.
